Due to dwarfs having absolutely no safety regulations at all in the workplace , I just lost 2 legendary miners while channeling to make a shaft down the earth , they fell 8 z-levels down. How do I safely dig a shaft without killing anyone? Also , is flooding the caverns with magma, my plan for the shaft's purpose , a good idea?

To make a shaft: Build up/down stairs all the way, then dig two squares in a line, and channel the further square.  Make sure it's directly on top.

So from the side, it'd look like this:
X = up/down stairs
_ = Floor
\ = down stairs
▒ = unmined
   = Channel

AFAIK staircases are treated as shafts by junk like refuse, dump and dwarves. And miners don't fall off them.

I suppose, but it's more fun to dig a huge pit XD

oh, if you want to for extra.. safety... you can wall off the mined tile in front of the channel so if your drain backs up like mine did last time I did something like this, it won't flood the stairs in case anything important is linked
