How to release trapped dwarves?

A few of my own dwarves rushed into battle and got caught in cage traps.  I've tried un-assigning them; then I tried building (B-J) the cages; linking the cages to a lever; and pulling it, but nothing happens.  They are pretty good military types, how do I set them free?  Note that now I can't view the cages with Q even though they are buildings.  31.12, Mac.


Also, dwarves are cruel - every single prisoner in my fort has died of thirst (except for these new ones).

Well, after rebuilding the cages, rehooking them up and pulling the lever, it worked.
