usually Intel chips run a bit faster and cooler
Hmm, I dunno about running cooler, but they can roll with a lot more punishment heatwise than AMD chips can.
Pretty much any AMD chip you can get uses a PGA pin, whereas Intel are all LGA -- which means Intel chips are also harder to screw up when installing.
"$200 worth of 'better'"?
In what world is the price difference on anything that even suitably resembles equivalency $200?
Remember, gigahertz are pretty much useless as a measure of processing power across architectures -- 3.7GHz on a current AMD chip is apparently actually less processing power than a 2.9 Ghz current Intel core.

This may all change with Bulldozer in September, though, depending on how it's priced.
And then change again with Ivy Bridge sometime next year.
The computer world is very fast-paced.

E: I will -not- suggest that the hexacores (or octocores, even) aren't worth it.  They can be, depending on what you're doing.  Most games will not be able to make use of them -- but some can.

Its pretty funny that for a long time it used to be AMD that were cheaper and did more with hertz that intel chips did.

What caused that to change?

R&D?

intel's stuff has been pulling ahead since core, while amd has sorta been treading water and cutting prices as bulldozer kept getting delayed.
