Brb, modding in magma-proof carp.

WHAT HAS (dwarven) SCIENCE WROUGHT?!

Volcanoes always use to cause that message for me. They stopped, at some point. Magma-proof aquatic elephants, anyone?

That's my first modding attempt, so it is crude.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It works in object testing area.
Maybe i should change material of their skin and blood.

Make their blood magma and their skin obsidian.

Or do the easy way out and atom-smash it all away through a smashing room at the bottom of the tube.

How do you get it in the room fast enough for it to not refill?

Just make the "room" a giant hallway with many bridges that raise off to the side.

I tried this once, but magma came up too fast to allow channeling and solidifying next layer :( Also, that image means that Toady actually programmed the possibility of this project... :o
What I see is that volcano refills quite slowly, it need a second or two to get additional 1/7 magma above full 7/7 magma level. So if you make channels while standing at 2/7 water, it almost immediately flows to newly dug hole and patch it with obsidian wall tile. That except for cave-ins into volcano - they produce lava mist and lava spatters around, which can block the movement of water. Also there is the risk of being washed into hole by water flow, it happens quite often and causes tantrums...

peregarrett that's just the technique I tried, unfortunately I had a fair few miners loose their babies while digging and ended up with a tantrum spiral. It is a workable method especially now the sides of the magma pipes are regular; in 40d having tiny pockets of magma whenever you dig down from a smaller to a larger section were annoying to remove.

Just make the "room" a giant hallway with many bridges that raise off to the side.
And generally a room large enough to fit a max-sized bridge is more than enough to fit all the lava that flows in while the bridge mechanisms are raising and lowering it. It'll take a few years, but the tube will empty. Although more rooms at multiple levels would be preferable.

Last time I attempted to drain a volcano I tapped it in a bunch of places along one side and installed pumps which sucked from the spot tapped and pushed the magma off the edge of the map.  With pumps pulling from around 15 'taps' the volcano drained fairly fast.  I should see if I still have that experiment somewhere and take some screenshots or something, might make it easier to explain
