I will be attempting to get to gannon in the first legend of zelda game, without ever getting the sword.

I will probably fail miserably, but I will try nonetheless.

The candle is your best friend. The first one is pretty lame, but it gets easier once you get the upgraded candle that can shoot more than one flame per screen.

...I tried that once. I concluded it wasn't possible. There are bosses guarding triforce components that are immune to both candle and arrows, and have too much health to be destroyed by bombs.

How do you kill them?

EDIT:
Hmm. I found a faq that claims it is possible.  Sounds like the guy who wrote it used the melee attack of the wand to great extent.
