Suicide booths not working
« on: September 12, 2010, 01:46:11 pm »

I have one 2x2 staircase going all the way down to the third cavern, with exactly one entrance hallway at each cavern.  I have placed a suicide booth at the end of each hallway, hoping to catch forbidden beasts on their way in.  Unfortunately, all three that I have encountered so far have chosen to bypass the suicide booth and go directly for my guard dogs at the other end of the hallway.

Each suicide booth is the same: a 3x3 square with a single rock support beneath it.  I know that level one building destroyers only go after wooden buildings, but I thought that forbidden beasts could destroy rock supports because they are level two.  What gives?

Building destroyers in 31.xx are smarter and do not attack supports.

If building destroyers still destroy Floodgates, you can set up a floodgate attached to one 7/7 pool of lava. It should kill the BDs

The ones that can be killed by magma, at least.

Time to hook up those supports to levers, I guess...

I discovered the same thing, and I suspect that whoever put the "suicide booth" in the trap design page on the wiki was simply speculating that it might work.

Considering that I'm not the only one who has observed the suicide booth's utter failure to do anything, I'm removing it from the wiki.

Now, there is a completely different suicide booth which consists of a lever adjacent to the support (and linked to it), and that type works nicely on nobles, misbehaving dwarves, and gremlins ("Something has pulled a lever!" "A section of the cavern has collapsed!").

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Might be easier to make a water cannon held back by a door which pushes the building destroyer down a pit...
Can building destroyers destroy bridges they are standing on?
bronze collossusses don't seem particularly pushable, but they will melt if you douse them in magma. Maybe for your FB's you could have a pair of doors, one to let out water and one to let out magma so they obsidianise themself.

This can work for minor destroyers like ogres and trolls, but FBs and titans are too tough to be washed away.

Building destroyers don't seem to ever destroy bridges - I use several drawbridges to seal my fortress from the caverns and the outdoors and nothing has ever found its way in.

I really like the Dead ManKitten Switch idea.  I'll have to consider trying that.

My normal Fallen Beast strategy involves setting up a medium-large area with some twisty passages to slow them down, and a workshop or a chained-up kitty in the middle.  This is separated from the caverns by a drawbridge or two.  The area above that is channeled out (two Z levels), and there are fortifications on the top level.  When the FB goes into the trap, I close the drawbridge behind it, station marksdwarves along the upper fortifications, and wait.

They don't and you can't retract bridges the (larger) building destroyers are on. You can support a drawbridge on the end of another bridge and retract the smaller bridge to collapse the first.

But what I'd do is have an obsidian trap: (z-level cross section)
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
▓                    ▓
╬ Lockable Hallway ╬

Make sure you retract the magma bridge before the water is dropped.

Tantruming dwarves WILL destroy bridges--- whether they are deployed or raised. So keep that in mind.
