Dwarf Fortress Challenge
« on: September 12, 2010, 05:29:26 am »

When I started playing Dwarf Fortress with my friends, we learned to play adventure mode without using the wiki. Pretty easy. We couldn't pull it off for fortress mode.

But that got me thinking, "How awesomely FUN would it be to learn to play the entire game without the wiki?"

So I challenge all new players to learn to play without the wiki! Challenge your friends! And so on! Strike the earth!

There's a difference between "challenge" and "throw your hands up in frustration because you don't know what buttons to push".

Well to be honest, most of the buttons are labelled.
Some aren't just exactly obvious, like the menu with mass reclaim/dump/forbid options.

Errr, frankly this is a bad idea.  Few enough people get past the learning curve WITH the wiki.  Removing their resources will only limit the amount of players who can pummel their way past the learning curve...

I hope you understand I'm not trying to insult you, but this is a really counter-productive idea...

But you see, the point is to be counter-productive! It's Dwarven fun! A few friends and no wiki can exchange information that they've learned and learn quite a bit in a shorter time than you'd think!  :D

Actaully i learned most of the game without the wiki, mind you my fortress were hap hazard, but i managed to get one last 5 years through military might alone(40d), knew none of the advance functions or how traps worked other than stone fall and weapon traps, all farms where AG. of course i gave up came back a year later(after i found out one of my freinds plays it) and discovered the wiki and these forums and thus can now build A proper fort

Did you know that if you write 3.14 on a piece of paper and hold it in a mirror, it will say pie? And if you divide 42 by 3.14... you get 13.37!

I learned everything myself (while hanging out with tbino), it was quite a challenge really freaking hard. In fact that's why I kept playing

I spoiled myself with the wiki rather quickly. Though I managed a two year fort before that. I find Dwarf Fortress challenging enough regardless.

Do I win the challenge if I did this four years ago?  :D

I failed to learn DF twice, and then I got lucky when Penny Arcade posted a link to TinyPirate's newby guide, with associated tileset-enhanced files.  It got me over the hump, and I doubt I'd have managed it on my own.  I still remember my first try, in adventurer mode, where I spent a good hour chasing a wild animal (gazelle or something, I don't remember) across a desert before I finally caught it, wrestled it to death, and died of thirst.  Awesome.  This game, in its current condition, needs a good deal of supplementary documentation--and a few utilities--to really shine.  Beer helps.
