The only downside is that it reflects contemporary population patterns, not those from the period in which Dwarf Fortress is set.  However, European settlement today is reflective of what it looked like at this time, only denser, so there's room to work with it even using contemporary biomes.

I think this would be a great reference for helping create realistic human settlement patterns, assuming it's not in use to some degree already.

Ooooh there MUST be some similar models for settlements throughout history for which data are available.  I'm pretty sure there's a lot of data to go from from records from the High Middle Ages throughout Europe... Hmmm... I'll take a look-see sometime.
