How do I take the items from caged things?

So I captured a few fleeing goblin snatchers, and I want their items for melting/making it easier to kill them. I've tried designating their items for dumping/melting, but it doesn't work.

On a related note, I would also like to know how to get squads to follow orders. They never seem to do :P

Never mind about the items, I seperated them already. Now how do I get the millitary to do things?

Are they activated and have orders? I'm not sure about needing to be activated, and I don't know how to do it, but you couldn't make it worse could you?
