Alternate route to HFS??? *Spoiler*
« on: October 22, 2010, 03:21:23 pm »

I still haven't gotten the basics down quite yet of the whole game, and I was trying to figure out how I might go about throwing caged enemies into my volcano. I can't seem to get the cage anywhere else from the trap except to dump it, so I had an idea. I'll build a floor over the caldera only linked to one support, have the support linked to a lever, and a dump with only caged enemies marked for it on the floor. That way, pull the level, section of cavern collapses into the volcano!

It took much trial and error to actually get the floor not connected to anything but the support (Floor is still linked to upstairs...) So I had the one floor tile deconstructed but Urist McMiner refused to deconstruct himself on the stairway. Over and over again I tried until finally, I just decided to test out my contraption anyway. I pull the lever with Urist still on the floor.

It worked! But something strange happened...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Then I follow the volcano all the way down as suddenly I am now able to and at the very bottom lies Urist McMiner.  He made it all the way to the bottom of the magma sea before bleeding out whilst discovering everything he could on the way down. :o

As it turns out, the pen was in fact a poor choice for melee combat in comparison to the sword.
So I just started playing this game and I accidentally nuked the moon.

This is actually a popular way to make a preliminary exploration of the caverns, usually by tossing a kitten or a puppy down the volcano.

Congrats for figuring it out by yourself, though. Anyone can read the forums and stumble upon a decent idea, but it's a nice feeling when you discover something on your own.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Also, building the specific cage you want to build can be ... problematic.  Unless you cheat :)

Go to your animal stockpile, pull a mass-forbid (d-b-f), and reclaim the specific cages you want to use (i.e. the ones with gobbos in them).

Now go to the edge of your caldera, and build a cage.  You should only be able to build using the cages you want to use.

Just be sure that you remember to reclaim the rest of the cages once you've designated all the cage constructions, otherwise you dwarves won't reload those cage traps when more gobbos show up.

Unless I'm misinterpreting this, you can just press x when selecting a cage to build and it'll say what's in each one.

I heard your like sieges so I put a Goblin fortress in your fortress so you could siege while besieged.

I've had it work with just a cave-in by dumping a small amount of water in from above to get a hanging falling chunk of obsidian.

Impressive.  I for one highly recommend you begin mining that wonderful, wonderful adamantine as soon as possible.

No need to cheat, use the x button when selecting cages to see their contents.

Engraved on the monitor is an exceptionally designed image of FPS in Dwarf Fortress and it's multicore support by Toady. Toady is raising the multicore. The artwork relates to the masterful multicore support by Toady for the Dwarf Fortress in midwinter of 2010. Toady is surrounded by dwarves. The dwarves are rejoicing.

Well this does seem like a suitable use for the darn things. Can't seem to kill them fast enough. Just trap the cats on a platform and periodically drop it.
