Orbital Magma Cannon.  Why just burn the world when you can burn the world

Fix'd, because a dwarf has no need for precision when it comes to magma.

Orbital Magma Cannon.  Why just burn the world when you can burn the world

Fix'd, because a dwarf has no need for precision when it comes to burning the world the first time with magma.

fixed that for you.  The precision comes in after obsidianizing the entire map.  Mainly to allow for a very dwarfy over-engineered project to enable the possibility of precision.

That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

Huh. For some reason I thought that volcanoes didn't refill. As I mentioned before, I have not had much practice with vocanoes. It does make the whole setup much easier.
I was just thinking about my experience with caveins, and had an idea to create an auto-reloading obsidian meteor system, using a similar system to the orbital magma cannon.

Apparently a cave-in gun (Lets call it an Obsidian rail gun shall we?) is difficult to make due to "stoppage."  i.e.  the obsidian contacts the barrel and supports itself.

Orbital Magma Cannon.  Why just burn the world when you can burn the world with precision ;P

Either this or a thermo-nuclear reactor. (Or as close as you can get to one)

I thought so. I think I'll do a few experiments to see if there are constructions that won't give support to the obsidian. Though, you guys have probably tried it all before.

Also, the concept of a thermo-nuclear reactor intrigues me. Could you elaborate?

EDIT: a further thought. Could unwanted immigrants me used to alter the path of invaders?

Now, forgive me if I'm wrong, but do pumps block the flow of fluids when not operating, but not support terrain? So, if I set up an area edged with pumps, and with a retractable drawbridge as a base, could this be used to create a hands free obsidian weapon?

from what i've seen the output block of the pump blocks backflow.  the obsidian would connect to the floor tile underneath it, i think.. Luckily you can build pumps so that this tile is over open space (the hanging pump).

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

That was exactly what I was thinking! Of course, building a whole bunch of pumps, supporting mechanisms, and getting large quantities of water to the surface in the first place might require effort ludicrously out of proportion to the actual, practical use of such a device.

Gentlemen, I beleve I have found my megaproject.

Now then, Make it able to fire on ANY square within the map by building layers and layers of pumps.  ;D

(imagine how amazing that would be...or link sectors that cave in on every square in say, a 10x10 block to a single lever.  100 squares of death at one lever pull?  :D)

Using the previous casualty ratio for square-to-death of 1:4, (2 dwarves, 2 animals), the probable casualties from a single 10x10 cave in would be 400. I find this to be satisfactory.

I'll keep you guys up to date on the project.

Ok, so the injured farmer has died from thirst. Three squares away from the wagon, and booze. Too bad, so sad... except she seems to have been very popular with the other dwarves. I've got red arrows going on off on two of the survivors. I didn't think I'd have so much FUN so early.

EDIT: :sigh: Now the miner with the broken bones has succumbed to infection. He was friends with all the other survivors. I am now waiting for the tantrums to begin.
