Can't be done, IIRC.

I thought you could do it with blocks? Make a stone block, then build a wall out of it, then engrave it, because block walls are smooth.

Not sure of that, but if it is true, then it's helpful for me as well.

Going to wait for confirmation first though.

Confirmation: Negatory. Blocks are still "Raw Adamantine Block Wall", and those can't be engraved.

Yea , I tried it on a artificial wall.

Any reason for this. I mean to me it seems like dwarves should be able to engrave any kind of stone.

Just a quirk of the system I suppose.

If I recall correctly, Toady can't figure out how the dwarves would do it. Constructed walls are basically chunks (or bars, blocks, or logs) of rock, metal, or wood stacked up, making engraving problematic. Imagine carving images on this.

I can think of some solutions (turns out some are things Toady said...):
  • Engrave the block before it is built, like commemorative bricks in some stone buildings; Possibly allow engraving block walls, but the block remains engraved after deconstruction.
  • Engrave a panel and build it on an existing wall, making it somewhat like a fresco.
  • Allow an actual fresco, but this would require paint. Plaster we have.

Well that's really cool. Here's another one from Kilo24 that was previously asked; 'do you have plans to leave constructed walls unengravable?'
Quote from: Toady One
The idea there is that the way constructions currently work ... it's a bit of a hastle to have something both be a construction and an engraving. It's not really a super large roadblock but it was just enough of a roadblock for me to be like, 'alright, I'm leaving this'. Now that it is a little bit of a project to get something like that in it makes me sit and think, what does it mean to engrave a construction if the construction's like a brick wall or something? Does it mean that you put a smiley face on every brick, or does it mean that you kind of remove the top inch of the bricks and engrave something in there or would you want to bring up a pre-carved panel and insert it into a slot or something. There's a lot of different options and I just haven't moved on that because I haven't really thought about what I want to do particularly. I'm not against it, I don't think there's a huge balance problem or anything allowing it, so we'll probably see something like that sometime.
