I suddenly have to "play" the game
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:21:00 am »

So, normally I have to play on my laptop since I didn't feel like flying my gaming rig or my work rig across the atlantic for grad school. (Hey, I ain't payin' $250 each way for some gorilla to throw my baby against a wall to see what happens.) Playing DF on my laptop produced 6FPS on good days after bathing the machine in Cheetah Blood.

Suddenly my "work" rig is doing 50-60FPS and I can no longer give an order and come back 20min later to see how that went.  Half of me is tempted to see how my gaming rig performs and the other half just wants to turn the FPS cap to 20.

Laptop: 766mb DDR2 (Sharing some with the Radeon Express 1100+), 2.2gig Turion 64.

Work Rig: 1.5gig DDR GF 5200 2100XP+

Its amazing what a lil ram and a touch of video card will do...

Granted, I now need to teach myself the game all over again.

Technically you could change the max FPS to a lower setting in the init file...

You should be getting far, far more out of your laptop. Especially if it's dual-core. I have similar (my processor's dual core and I'm not sure about yours) and I can regularly pull 40-50 FPS.

Hence why I said turn the FPS cap to 20.

Xgamer,  What's your video in that though? I know there's that nasty hidden video requirment which the Laptop just has zero of.

Edit: Also, for the record they're all single cores.

Video card: ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. But my processor is dual-core sot that's probably why.

dwarf fortress is multi threaded ?

Wasn't aware of that. I didn't think it would run faster on dual core.
i don't have a dual core to test it, but with the kind of computing it does, i wonder how it may be multithreaded... physics on one core (projectiles, fluids, cave-in checks, temperature...), dwarfs on the other ?

i was pretty sure it wasn't however.

DF doesn't use Dual Cores at all, so it runs faster on that full 1.66 Ghz (XP2100+) than the 1.1 Ghz of a single core on the Turion.

But still you should indeed be getting more performance out of that laptop.
Kill all non-essential apps. Make sure it is plugged in (don't play on battery, MUCH slower due to power saving functions)
And what also works is turning the G_FPS CAP lower.

Try turning Weather off also. It doesn't do much at the moment, and is fairly CPU-heavy.

Update your video card drivers for better OpenGL performance.

I thought you were referring to a gorilla in Dwarf Fortress throwing your (dwarf) baby against a wall (In other words, paying $250 to transport a computer that can show that stuff going on)

Whoops...

It's not like I enjoy things splattering in Dwarf Fortress... who knows, maybe someone had interests in babies uhh.. splattering too...
