Eye Candy on the Embark Screen
« on: August 27, 2010, 03:59:25 pm »

Now, before anyone goes and flames me for wanting better graphics over better features, please read the post!

I was reading on the development page about new things happening and Toady posted this picture:

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/imgs/farm2.png

Is it not amazing? Does it not look better than the current embark screen? Having 3 levels of detail with points of interest mapped to pixels instead of tiles looks drop dead gorgeous IMHO and should totally be the default. It's unlikely that this would take too long to code and I hope wouldn't be all that difficult. Since Toady made the above reference picture, I'm pretty sure he knows how to make it work for the game. It's an opportunity presented and I think the idea lends itself beautifully to the game.

Here is a link to the dev item:

http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/index.html

but since it's today's dev item that may not be there for too long now. There is a second smaller world with the same effect too if anyone goes looking

Now that you've read the entire post (and looked at the picture), please feel free to flame me ;D

Those images are the result of using the "export" function at the end of worldgen (and I think also legends mode lets you do it), it's just not widely used.  This is already a feature, it's just not used with the actual embark screen, although since it is a standalone file, you could certainly just open the image alongside your game when looking for a place to embark.

You can thank the psuedo-ASCII game design theology for the lack of such detailed maps, although I think Baughn is working with something regarding the mini-map, so he might consider doing that for the little worldmap window, although the local and regional maps, I would definitely still want in ASCII form, so that I can see the clear boundaries of what I'm looking at.

The ASCII styled styles give you a more concrete idea of what is going on than the blurry colors on those maps.   You can export that style of map and look at it when deciding where to embark.

It would be very cool if that map were available, preferably via a simple key-press, during embark.
