I know these are both quite old cards, the 6600GT being at least a year older than the 7300GS. I've tried to find which is superior but I lack the technical knowledge to work it out.

In general, I've come to the conclusion that the second digit of the designation (for NVidia cards at least) is more important than the first, for performance. In this case, this is completely true. The 6600GT trumps the 7300GS in every possible aspect. They also both support the same shader models and DX versions, so no difference there either.

If you want technical details, look here. The only stats the 7300 beats the 6600 in is vertex operations/second (by not much), and core clock (by 50MHz). The 6600 is vastly superior in every other way.

Thanks Sean. I got given a 7300 recently, and being the nub that I am assumed it would be better than the 6600GT. Bigger number must equal better right? Apparently not. Seems a little counter intuitive to me, but that's the wonderful world of computers.

Yeah, I thought that too until I compared how Dungeon Siege runs on a 5500 compared to a 4800. For NVidia series at least, think of the first digit as the "series", and of the second digit as actual "power". Plus, the designation letters at the end are indicative - for power, GTX>GTS>GT>GS>G. Once you remember how that works, you won't go horribly wrong with choosing a videocard. I fell into that pit once, even if I didn't have the GPU as a criteria when choosing my ASUS laptop with a 8400M G card.
