I recently experienced a few crashes while searching for new items during the 'careful preparation' phase.  Reinstalling the binaries did not solve the problem.  After a little experimentation, I found that if I selected certain item categories while typing in specific characters of a search term, I could reliably reproduce this behavior.  Here's how:

Fire up DF, start a new game, choose any site, press 'e' to embark, tab to the item screen, press 'n' to add a new item, then:

Type 'ME', select 'Leather', type 'A', crash!
Type 'PIC', select 'Large Cut Gems', type 'K, boom!
Type 'TUR', select 'Small Cut Gems', type 'T', bam!
Type 'LOA', select 'Bodywear', type 'C', kapow!
Type 'BAR', select 'Barrels', type 'S', wham!
Type 'DOL', select 'Large Cut Gems', type 'S', bang!

There's something else odd about this -- when I enter the final character that triggers the crash, the category that is selected is always (as far as I can tell) second from the top in the list of those remaining.

This is fixed in the freshly released 33d.  I just noticed it yesterday when I was fixing trap components in that menu.
