Stairs VS Ramps
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:54:05 pm »

Something that's seriously bugging me. Title says it all, really: stairs vs ramps in terms of entranceways, paths and other such things.

What I've got so far:

STAIRS:
+ No caveins.
+ No chance of miners trapping themselves.
+ Slightly more space-efficient.

RAMPS:
+ Allow passage of caravans (?)
+ Smoother travel.
+ Natural and dwarfy.
+ Easily removed in emergencies.

I use ramps almost exclusively and the only real reason for it is that they look better than visualizers.  They also take fewer moves to use unless up/down staircases are involved.

I've heard stairs also eat up more pathfinding resources.

Ramps are a boon for my fortress's FPS.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.
