Multilangual Dwarf Fortress
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:25:07 am »

Hello Community,
i will keep this post short because my bad english.

I would suggest an easy option to translate Dwarf Fortress, for example an xml-file or an txt-file with texts for placeholders.

Greetings,
Shuro

It's been discussed, and it's much more complicated than it looks at first. Toady is very unlikely to work on this for a while yet.

That's the great thing about this forum. We can derail any discussion into any other topic.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

i know its hard to implement, and also it is hard to use everytime, but also it is a big feature for the world.

The game is still changing a lot, and would be hard for Toady to make a good translation for until it is done.

Likewise, I'd love to have it in Spanish or other languages so I can brush-up and learn those languages!  :D

Toady doesn't have to make a translatation, all he needs to do is make it possible for people to translate it.

I think the most salient response to this thread is the following:

This is planned for the future. Until then, everyone must play in English or not at all. However, I think this is a relatively low priority, because most people in the civilized world understand English to some degree.

It's something Toady knows about, and intends to do, so in a manner of speaking, the main goal of a "make the game translatable" thread is already achieved, and there's no reason to argue the point further.

If you want to talk about how this can best be implimented, there's plenty of room to argue for specifics, such as what needs there would be for accomidating any given language, and how to structure the fill-in-the-blank method of grammar that this game uses as its base.

You might want to look here for some clue on the sometimes wonky way this works.
