The amazing stairway of water destruction

So I dug to an aquifer, mined into into it to flood the bottom of the mine. Then 2 levels above that I tunneled into a freshwater lake hoping to completely flood the tunnel system. Instead once the water gets to 2/7 on the stairs above 1 level above the aquifer it vanishes, and the cycle has been going on non-stop for an hour or more now.

Doesn't an aquifer absorb water?
