Underwater breathing?

I was just watching my dwarf wassle with the elephants next to a pond and looked away for a few seconds... when I looked back my dwarf was gone and the phant was walking away.. I think "oh no please dont let the dwarf be at the bottom of the pond!" but I looked and there he was...the thing is he wasnt drowning. Bug?

How deep was the water?  Did the dwarf have swimming skill?
