Oh I see, thanks, that's helpful.  Though I normally free up those barrels quickly anyway just by starting to cook lavish meals as soon as I can.

You'll probably free up enough barrels at the start just by eating. Dumping stuff is a bit of a waste and time consuming for you and your dwarves and making up 5 or more extra barrels for booze is pretty quick. Although that said, after butchering your pack animal you'll have enough meat to last a year anyway.

For a quick start, hammer-man is the better skill for the weapons trainer in my example. Cheap, easy to make copper/silver hammers are far better at the start than the difficult to get/make steel battle axes. Axes are pretty pointless without steel/bronze. Copper picks provide all the limb flying potential you need (and are handy for the fort early on and are very easy to gulag-train new recruits with).

As a question, just how important is wood density? Does it make for lighter beds/barrels/bins/shields? Are lighter shields any worse at blocking? And are heavier ones better at shield bashing? You could be really retentive and change out the wood in my example for alder/willow/whatever if it helps any.
