learning make video stream in Ubuntu for DF streaming.
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:14:38 am »

I was on reddit a while ago, where someone mentioned that we need more DF streamers. The problem is, the website of choice (twitch.tv) does not offer any easy Ubuntu-compatible ways to stream. Well, I'm a geek, so I can figure this out! It... just might take a while.

I tried using VLC, which in theory has all the options I need. It has an option to stream, and in theory it would have been pretty easy to stream the video. There is even a little java app called jtvlc that is supposed to make streaming relatively simple.

And... it didn't work. I debugged for about an hour, and the best I could do is for a video stream to play on my desktop at around 1 frame per 30 seconds. Nope.

So now I learned that ffmpeg has a streaming option. I like the idea of ffmpeg anyways, so now I'm learning to use it all via command line.

Trying VLC again. There's gotta be a way to make it take a single window and stream it effectively.

No! No! I will not massacre my children. Instead, I'll make them corpulent on crappy mass-produced quarry bush biscuits and questionably grown mushroom alcohol, and then send them into the military when they turn 12...
