Irrigation problems
« on: August 13, 2010, 01:37:32 pm »

So I tried to set up the irrigation system for underground farming today, but ran into an issue when the hatches, having been linked to the proper lever, apparently aren't opening/aren't allowing the water through. Some pictures:

In the upper right corners are where the hatches are, currently set to off (closed). Turning them on just changes the little puddle image to a normal 7, without dropping any water.

The blue scribbles are what spots the hatches are above.

I'm sure I didn't mess up on linking the hatches, as they do seem to do something when I flip the switch. Is it just the placement? An option I missed?

Thanks in advance.  :)

Did you channel out the spots immediately below the Hatches, before emplacing them? A hatch built on top of intact floor won't do anything... it needs to be built over an "open space".

I use a much simpler plan when irrigating from pools (it won't work from a stream or river). I just lay out a large Farm room right next to the pool, and knock the corner off the pool's wall.

Because the breach is made corner-to-corner, the water leaks out slowly enough for the Miner to just walk away safely. After it floods the room and evaporates, I plug the gap again with a constructed wall.

I did not. T_T I guess that's my fault then.

I wonder, is there any way to knock out the ceiling of a room from below? If so I could theoretically drop the water down without killing any of my dwarves.

Not with the hatches on the floor tile.  Your best bet is to slap together a wooden screw pump and have a dwarf manually pump the water out of the holding chambers, then you can get in there and remove the hatch, channel the floor, then replace the hatch and refill.

No, no, no... it's a lot easier than that.

Assuming that those two water-rooms (with the non-functional hatches) are already isolated by your Floodgates, so the only water that we're dealing with is the water already in the rooms... then just dig over and channel out two spots.

The water will rush down the channels into the rooms below.

I actually ended up working blue emu's method into my solution:

After it's done, I'm going to fix the hatch so it actually goes properly, test it to make sure, and then it should be grand. Not only that, but I have two more spots for farms. Hooray Dwarven ingenuity. 8)

Thanks for the help guys.

EDIT: Haha, missed your post by a few minutes. I will remember that next time I mess up irrigation. :D
