Using a hole as a resource chute
« on: August 09, 2010, 07:43:19 am »

Hi

I'm wanting to create some kind of chute from my ground level to right next to my carpenter stands for wood. Essentially I want it so once wood is chopped on ground to have them drop it down so they don't have to carry it down however many levels to my carpenter workshop. Is this possible? How would I do it?

Thanks

1. Make hole
2. Set dump zone right next to hole (Adjacent tile)
3. Set cut wood for dumping
4. Dorfs will chuck wood down hole.
5. Unforbid wood at bottom of hole.

One thing to note is if you set up a dump zone with a drop off, the dwarves will prefer that one to any others (in case you use multiple dump zones).  They will march all the way across the map to toss something off a ledge rather than use a dump zone right next to them.  I rediscovered this the hard way when my dwarves decided to dump a bunch of ice near my forges.

By set dump zone, do you mean garbage pile or pit?  Also, won't they just toss the garbage onto the square not in the hole?

Oddly, there is a difference between a garbage dump zone, and a refuse stockpile.

The dump zones are where dwarves take things you've marked "Dump", and refuse stockpiles are where they take corpses, body parts, remains, bones, etc.

By dump zone, I mean garbage zone (i->g if I remember my hotkeys).  Garbage zones behave differently when next to a cliff (including a downward ramp).  The dwarf will prefer to stand on a tile defined by the garbage zone, and toss the item into the nearby hole, not onto the floor actually designated by the garbage zone.
