Which offers better protection...?
« on: August 09, 2010, 08:18:44 am »

I have an Artifact Bone Buckler, an Artifact Pig Iron Buckler, and many (non-Artifact) Steel Shields of varying quality up to Excellent (no Masterwork items, though).

Which is best to wear?

In version 0.31, probably the ≡Steel Shield≡.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

From what I understand, artifact status doesn't grant additional stats. An artifact pig iron buckler will always be worse than a steel shield, I think.

However, I'm also pretty sure that the material shields are made of doesn't matter. A wooden shield blocks as well as a steel one. It's only with armor that you wear that the material matters. I could be wrong about that, but I've never seen an attack go "through" a shield - if the attack is blocked, it's blocked even if it's a steel sword against a balsa wood shield. Even if I'm right, however, shields offer better protection than bucklers.

Of course, I'm not sure whether shields/weapons give a skill boost depending on quality (as they did in 40d), in which case the artifact bucklers might be better. I'm pretty sure shields/buckers don't (but I think that artifact weapons might), but they might, in which case the buckler might be better. So I dunno.
