Am I missing something out?
« on: August 16, 2010, 03:55:45 pm »

When I first discovered Dwarf Fortress, I didn't pay much attention on the Adventure mode.
Now I feel that I should atleast try it, since all that Today is talking about in the dwarftalk is adventure mode, and its seems like a pretty big thing.

The deal is that I don't see the fun with it, yet?
I start out in a small town, I go around. Fast travel untill I get in some sort of trouble - kill it, butcher it and sell it for stuff. And so it goes on untill something kills me or I just get bored and tries to slaughter a village or two.

Am I missing something? Are there more to adventrue mode than just this?
It looks fun, and combat is really fun. I've heard something about caves and suchs, is it there all the fun is?

The Wikia doesn't give me much information, more than some controls.
Please if you got anything, share it.
Cheers!

It's in that room.

If dwarves decided to live in trees like hippies, they'd still do it better than the elves.

Right now the only thing to do is try to accomplish challenges that you set yourself. Like, "I'm gonna go find that artifact that my dwarves made 10 years ago." (Which is a lot harder than it sounds.)

You can get quests from leaders, but it can take a long time to locate one that has a quest for you.

Also, sometimes it's just fun to slaughter a bunch of goblins for revenge. If you can find them.

By the way, I design table top RPGs and other games. You can buy some.

You just mess around and enjoy equipping your character, killing stuff and exploring places. Quite similar places I must say, I want to see the day when we get random or varied architecture and building templates.

I like to start as a "play now" character and make my gear from other animals and trading for it.

Also Toady One said that the ultimate goal is to merge both modes. Of course it's impossibly far, but the current development of the adventure mode allows more Fun, and also it should be possible to personally control your dwarves later (Dungeon Keeper "possession" style) so it should probably help.

I like to try to create adventurers with a sense of narrative behind them: forging alliances with certain civilizations, banding with other adventurers (generated by me or otherwise), taking on epic monsters.

I have plans to settle with one of my adventurers over a kobold cave (first dropping any of his/her useful equipment), then build a fortress there and adopt the adventurer I've settled there with Runesmith. I'd incorporate the adventurer's dropped loot into the fortress. I've actually done this once before, so it does work. The bronze collosi drop masterwork statues when they die, so if you kill one or two, you'll have some mighty fine treasure to decorate your adventurer's bedroom with. Heck, I even carried the remains of the NPC she'd travelled with to the location with the intention of giving him an honorable burial.

...but because I didn't have the display case mod installed at the time, I wasn't able to make good on this. It seems one can't bury non-dwarven corpses in coffins, so it was either leaving the corpse in its own room or putting it in a display case.

As as Deon said, "Play Now" characters can be a fun change of pace. For extra kicks, why not mod in goblins or kobolds as an adventurer? It'll be sure to give you an extra challenge. Alternatively, why not try mastering an exotic weapon, like a blowgun or a scourge?

About "play now", you should either try my genesis mod (signature) or Wanderer's Friend mod which allows you to craft weapons, gear (like quivers and backpacks) and ammo in adventure mode. Too bad you can't craft right-sized armor yet (a bug).

Pro for Genesis here: different animals in Genesis have different materials, so tough beasts like minotaurs, giants, dragons etc. have stronger bones (and dragons get dragonscale) so there's a reason to kill them: to make weapons out of their bones and items out of their leather/scales.

Pro for stand-alone mod: vanilla DF (no new races/items) if you dislike changes here; more items to craft (I removed some "unrealistic" crafting, like great axes from bones), so you have less realistic but more in general options here, so there's more field to customize your equipment.
