Dorf Birth Control
« on: July 31, 2010, 06:54:08 am »

In an attempt to prevent my latest fortress from getting stuck with too many useless children, I edited the raw file for the ratios to 0:0, like the note said to do to have no births in the fort. One of my miners however just had a baby, so dwarf birth control apparently doesn’t work. She and her husband are from a migration wave. So it is possible she arrived pregnant, but it still made me go “Wait… What?”

Edit: So I guess that could answer that question if anyone was wondering if Dwarfs could arrive pregnant.

At least it wasn't a cat.

try making something like this in meeting areas:

wwww
xP hx
xwxx

above that a simple

Mdh

and undeartneath a
dddD
M=magma source/water source
d is dig
h=hatch
p=pressure
x=floodgate
w=wall
D=drain
linking everything expect the hatch to the drain up with the pressure plate then making the plate activate only when a child (or cat) steps on it. then either link the lever to the hatch or put in another plate that activates at 7/7 magma. make this open the hatch to the drain so it drains away. if you connect this to a good timer you can have your own automated catplosion/dwarf baby countermessure.

Did you edit the general RAWS, or the ones in the specific save file?

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

Foolproof birth control: get rid of the female dwarves.

I edited the general RAWS before world creation, so the Specific ones should mirror that shouldn't they? And I've had a few other marriages occur both before and after the incident, and none of those have produced children yet. So the one fluke is it, and he is three now. I've been toying with the idea of just calling him the Son of Armok and giving him some position so as to be the religious leader of the fortress or something, maybe make a noble position I can assign to him so he is immune from the economy.
