Soldier (cannot follow order)
« on: July 26, 2010, 08:20:32 am »

Confession: I did post about this in Gameplay Questions a couple of days ago so sorry for doing it again. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this job title (ie. in [v] [g]) I'd never seen it pre .11 (using .12 now, still there). I have a squad of 4 marksdwarves and one of 6 melee fighters. When set to train very often one or more marksdwarves will show this as their job, for a long time, basically doing no training. I thought it was to do with not having enough archery targets but I have lots now and it still happens. Also the melee squad members sometimes show it too now. If they can't train with someone else they can (and often do) individual combat drill so I don't understand why they can't follow the training order. If that's whats happening.

Thanks

Have you assigned the marksdwarves some ammunition to train with?

I've seen this, it's irritating because they are the only protectors of my fledgling fort. I attribute it to laziness, so I unassign their rooms until they're ready to cooperate. It seems to work fairly well.

They have ammunition. They WILL all train. just not at the same time!

@Argonnek: What room do you unassign? The barracks or their bedrooms?!

Bedrooms (which they stole from the starting seven anyway) so that they don't have anywhere private to hang out while they are being insubordinate.

I've seen it, and it's not specific to marksdwarfs.  Usually one of my wrestlers-in-training has it when the training cycle first activates, but they always drop from "Cannot Follow Order" into training shortly thereafter.

It /may/ be an equipment issue, as the last time I saw it I was still ordering the militia to carry provisions and didn't have enough backpacks.

(I also don't have any private bedrooms... not sure I follow the logic there.)

My militiadwarves do this in combat sometime, for what seems to be a number of reasons. sometimes it's that their squad commander died, other times it's that they can't reach the enemy, but in most cases I can't figure out why.

From my observation, it happens when there isn't enough archery ranges for every marksdwarf. Try defining an archery range out of every target.

I just noticed this job.  Very obscure message.  Wiki contains nothing about it.  I have no idea what it means.  My military was developed in the buggy days, so I've been experimenting with things since 30.12 came out.  Much now seems to work.  This job first appeared when I set my military to Active/Training on the schedule menu under Military.  I've been reducing the number to train in the scheduled training as my dorfs don't seem to be able to pull it together to get more than 2 training (8 member squads).  I have 4 archery targets, all of which are not being used.  Many of the military dorfs seem to be caught doing civilian jobs, but it's not clear this is the origin of the "cannot follow order" job.  This needs a better job name, so it's more clear what's going on.

I get this quite a bit from my marksdwarves on the battlements. Seems if they can't melee their enemy, they're usually not interested. Sometimes one shoots though.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Getting this bug from my entire 9-dwarf macedwarf army.

A game-breaker IMO.

I have this sometime, the worst is when your order them to go kill something just outside the fort, few steps from them and they do that, but they don't stay there, no, they go drink something in the diner room well inside the fort!!! But its pretty rare.

It also happen if you don't have a barrack set to train for your squad, so if your full squad do this its probably the reason.

I had a soldier, at the head of the main melee training unit (not really trained/equipped well, but necessarily sent against an enemy who had popped up)...  It was hilly ground, loads ramps, but he was within sight and (AFAICT) easy direct/near-direct pathing of all the enemies included in the set "K"ill order list.  And he (or she, I never took note) was still apparently pursuing, even with the "Cannot follow order" active.

Not sure how that would have turned out, as a marksgoblin squad was out there as well which let loose.  I like that embark location for loads of things, but the nature of the foothills that I dig into has made it difficult to make any sort of barrier/baffle defence against ranged combat (and I've not yet trained up anyone for ranged under any .31, even though it appears it should now be working nicely).

I just started getting this for training dwarves, but the most bewildering instance was the other day, when I had a kill order much like Starver.  My squad was doing fine hunting the guy down, but then once they made contact, about halfway through their first encounter with him, one of my fighters (who was in front) knocks the target to the ground, then stands in place and lets the target run away.  I check her status and sure enough it said "cannot follow order".  Right in the middle of a blasted fight!  That she was winning!  The target's right toe was sitting on the ground in front of her!  It turned what could've been a straightforward operation into...fun...as the rest of the squad chased the guy all over my fortress, until they finally butchered him to death in the middle of the dining room.

I should also note that they continued to attack him well, well after he died.  Just hacking and chopping and hacking.  I finally had to step in and specifically cancel the kill order, and then switch the squad to inactive, just to get them to stop.  I guess they were making up for the slacker...

My melee dwarves have been ordered to carry no food and no water, since it's broken anyway. They just store foodstuffs at their armor stands, where it rots. They never go on 'cannot follow orders' mode anymore, so I guess it's indeed an equipment thing.

My 2 marksdwarves however keep going on 'cannot follow orders' mode, no matter if there's enough bolts. I have enough archery targets (2) as well.
Sometimes they practice a bit, then they go back to 'cannot follow orders', and proceed to hang out in the fort's dining hall. They do not have personal rooms.
