Caged animal life
« on: July 31, 2010, 05:20:36 am »

Hi dwarfs!!!  :P

So i don't want to get the same slow down as in my last fort, so it is time now to cage all those smelly animals runing around.

So i have few totally stupid questions...

If i put the cows in a cage, can they be milked and will they go back in the cages after the milking?

If those animals are caged, do they still breed, or should i left some free to get my butchery/tanning working?

a butcher will take animals from a cage, although they will not breed in there.  The best solution in my opinion is to chain up a few breeding animals.  When chained they dont suck up too much pathfinding and they still spawn little critters.

Cows in cages can still be milked.  The milker will take the cow from the cage and milk it, and then either the milker or another dwarf will return the cow to the cage.

Creatures in cages can't become pregnant or make other creatures pregnant.  Creatures which become pregnant while not caged can give birth in cages.  What you can do if you want to breed your dairy cows is have a bull or two chained up outside the cage, and keep all the cows in the cage.  When the cows are removed to be milked they can get pregnant, and will then give birth after being returned to the cage.
