RAM question... Prove your geekiness!
« on: August 01, 2010, 01:05:28 pm »

I'm upgrading a Dell Poweredge 6350- a server machine, circa 2000. I got it for free, so I can't look this gift fish in the silk purse or something like that.

Unfortunately the memory it came with appears to be very, very much like DIMM, but it isn't. Take a look:

On the left is a modern DIMM chip. On the right is the current RAM. The interface on each board is almost exactly identical, except for that notch. Currently I have one gig of ram split amoungst four chips like that on the right.

Can anyone identify the form factor of the old ram? All I can find anywhere that looks anything like that is regular DIMMs.

We are considering using large paging files on fast hard drives as a last resort- we'll be hosting a rather memory-intensive but low-processing program on it, the Minecraft Multiplayer Survival server. Anyone know if that would work with any kind of efficiency?

I'm not sure, but going by the wiki page on DIMM, they could be DDR and DDR2.

Look at the pic here. See a similarity?

I also suspected SIMMs, if your rig is that old, but I don't think they can have 256Mb per chip.

I thought that myself, but both chips have two notches- one of them isn't visible on the picture. The notch on the picture is off to the side, the other one is in the center of the boards.

If it's the model you say, Dell still has their service manual for it available online. According to that document, it uses something called 'EDO RAM.' I'd recommend googling the computer's model name and seeing if you can find anything more. That's heading towards 'vintage' territory for computer equipment, so...yeah.

Then it's SIMM, like I suspected. The difference is also similar. I don't know if EDO allows SIMMs to have 256Mbytes on a chip, but that seems like the most likely explanation.
