My water reactor is leaking quite a bit and I think this is causing minute interruptions in the powering of the mill that runs off it.

In the Wiki, the reactor side walls obstruct where you need to pull power from, so i have to skip one wall to put the gearbox and it leaks from there.

is there a workaround for this?

You can pull power from any side of a pump.  You can also pull power from above the pump, by channeling a hole in the Z-level above and then building a gear there.
