How can you tell if a zone has magma in it? (Apart from, obviously a volcano)

I wish there would be small clusters of magma to find all over.  I always hate the idea of trying to pump that magma all the way up to my fortress.  :(

You can move the fortress down to the magma instead, or you can fiddle with the worldgen settings so you only have 1 cavern layer, then embark on flat terrain, this usually puts the magma at 30-40 levels down, which is not really bad at all.
