Also the fact that all the successful sparring attacks are described as "lightly tapping the target." I haven't been paying attention long enough to see if they gain skill any faster than individual combat drill all the time (though they should gain armor user skill etc from this, right?)

"... Don't worry Urist, we'll only do light taps."
"Umm, okay."

Valuing life seems too close to an aesthetic rule for me, I think.
Only in Dwarf Fortress is the value of life placed as "aesthetic."

C means there's a combat report that you have not viewed.
H means there's a hunting report that you have not viewed.
S means there's a sparing report that you have not viewed.

Lowercase (r) key, I think. Should say on the key help screen, the one you can turn on or off by cycling with (tab).

The World Without Knifebear — A much safer world indeed.
regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I haven't seen sparring yet, my 6-year fort died to a crash when I tried to update the save. I did notice the combat demonstrations seem to work amazingly fast; I had a core squad who'd been doing solo drills and random defense for 3 or 4 years and were still struggling along. The month after I got them on reliable training schedules, 4 of them had reached -lord status.

Of course I started playing in 2010 so I have no previous military experience to compare this to.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.
