Antidotes, medicines and vaccines
« on: July 20, 2010, 12:06:09 pm »

An idea i just had: Combining alchemy and medicine a medical dwarf (or alchemist) should be able to make an antidote if he gets a vial (or barrel or fang or whatever you want) of the original poison and the medics should apply it to the affected ones (if they have enough diagnostician skill) Also medicines with a miz of plants and seeds for slowing infections or stopping an illnes from spreading (if they are implemented) What do you think?

A vaccine is pretty high tech, better steer clear.

We already get antivenom extracts from some creatures. It's just a matter of making them actually work.

Oddly enough, a cave spider's bite inflicts permanent damage by making the dwarf randomly spazz out or something. I don't really see why the antivenom would help if you already sustained brain damage. Not like there's any of the concoction left in your tissues after such a long time.

Better forget about the vaccines then...

But about the poison, it needs some time to act so if the antidote is ingested in time it should have some probability (based on quality) to have effect, so it prevents any permanent damage.

Would ingesting the antidote before being poisoned nullify the effects?

Finally, a use for all the barrels of blood and vemon which traders keep on bringing!

Would ingesting the antidote before being poisoned nullify the effects?

Depends on the poison, but often yes. If the antidote is in the system at the same time the poison is, it should be able to take effect. The downside is antidotes which are poisons themselves, provided in very small doses. And the ones which work by purging the entire system ...

A poisoner poisoning an entire meal, but ingesting the antidote(s) beforehand so that he can eat his portion normally, even if he is forced to switch plates with someone else, is a somewhat common trope.

New way to assasinate nobles: POISON FOR FUN! poison their food:--> (Plump helmet roast of FUN: finely minced plump helmet, finely minced plump helmet, finely minced dwarven syrup and finely minced GCS poison)

It would be fun, but not appliable, so... if a meal or drink gets a smear of poison by accident... and the well is "contaminated" with the antidote... and the door of the noble room is closed...

Well nevermind, permanent and long term damage like necrosis should not dissappear with the antidote, but at least it should stop its extension and you would have to guard a bit more carefully your food stockpile because if a puisonous FB gets inside...

Also, a different kind of poisons... HERBICIDES! i think it can be useful if you want a garden ONLY with grass, without shrubs and trees... or just to keep the channels clean of tower-caps... atleast for a while...
