Military skills not advancing? (31.12)
« on: July 30, 2010, 05:09:18 pm »

My military have been training for a few seasons now and I'm yet to see any improvement in any of their skills. I managed to get them up to pretty decent stats in 31.10, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Their schedule is set to training, they have a room to train in, I can see they are training in it! They're even sparring, which I've never seen before. But still, noone's skills are going up. Anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure you make the combat skill appear on screen?
If you "v" a unit, then "g" to see his skills, you can hide of show his combat skill with "c", same with labor and social skills. I think you have your combat skills hidden, because they really should have some skills after few seasons of training even if they had none to start with.

Nope, I'm using dwarf therapist too, so I can see all their skills. I have noticed that now four of them have gained novice teacher skill though.

They've been training for a year, and at most, a few have gained one or two levels in striking and dodging.

If no one has any military skills, and no one has student/teacher skills, the first gains are very slow. Once a few of them get above novice in a skill or two and teach the others, things will go exponentially faster.

Yep i always give one of my embark dwarf some fighting and axe skills (the carpenter/woodcutter), thats maybe why my first squad learned from start.

This really needs to be fixed.
Low skill dwarves should gain much more quickly.
I imagine it is the way it is now to prevent you from rapidly arming militias and spurring them into competency, but as it is right now you can have dwarves training for 3+ years without developing the necessary skills to not die instantly.

Right now the game grossly favors a "super soldier" approach. IE:
Let one dwarf consume every training bolt you produce, give him the best gear (ie adamantine), and have him mine and smoothe when not shooting to build stats and you end up with a murderous machine gun dwarf.

Split those bolts between a full squad of 10 archers and you will get absolutely zero results.

The same holds true for melee. Embark with a well skilled dwarf and start him training immediately. He'll achieve terminator status, but even if you turn your first peasants into warriors they will never achieve middling competency, nevermind terminator prowess.

Personally I am finding that breeding war dogs and having one machine gun dwarf with a "squad" of war dogs is more effective than having 30 mixed soldiers in iron/steel armor with 2-3 years of training.

It really makes me angry that that is the case.

I've been training migrant dwarves that came with some military skills - they go straight into the military, and the one with the highest skills becomes the commander. But it seems that if they don't have the teacher skill, everybody (including that dwarf) gains incredibly slowly. This didn't seem to matter in 31.10 - dwarves rapidly progressed with or without a teacher.

Ah well, at least they all have war elephants...

I'm running 31.12 and haven't had this much trouble. My military of 17 dwarfs only does personal combat drills, and none of them for more than a year. They all half decent equipment - steel chain shirt, steal greaves, wood shield, copper axe. They were out-maned by a ton of mace goblins and an entire squad of goblin archers and we only lost 2 troops and 1 civilian with some varied injuries to another 6 troops or so. It's not like I haven't lost 'terminator' dwarfs in other forts as well.
