Oblivion and GalCiv are best games of the year, but best != good, best = better than the rest. Now, DF is good AND best.

That article is spot on what I'm thinking about the game. My perception of the gaming industry has been fundamentally changed by this game.

Dwarf fortress is to Oblivion what Michelangelo is to a factory of chinese immigrants producing paintings on a large scale using hi-tech equipment. The latter isn't art, and that's why no matter how many bajillion dollars you put into a game, it doesn't neccessarily mean people will like it.

I'm not sure how specific immigration debates go into this...  All I know is that DF was called "pure scoreboard", which was cool.

I found out about DF from the Dubious Quality blog.

The guy is smart and a good writer, and he can be merciless about things which are bad in games (recent stuff about Madden for example). Even when he is writing about games that I an not in to, like sports sims, he is really good about describing what is good and bad, and the things that make the game work.

It's actually a bit bizarre, I've been reading his blog for a while and the amount of praise he gives DF is almost over the top compared to other games he's talked about. Not someone who usually writes in hyperbole.

Anyways, he's right. I don't think I'll be playing much else until Spore.

I doubt anyone will be playing some silly game that is waaaay too overhyped for something completely unexisting.
