Suspicious lack of nobles
« on: July 08, 2010, 10:16:06 pm »

My fortress has been going strong for almost eight years now. I have a population of 112 dorfs, tons of food, and a tremendous amount of created wealth. I'm well defended with traps and a decent military, and I still no nobles have arrived. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but I constructed an unfortunate accidents chamber around year 5 and still haven't gotten a chance to use it. Any idea why the nobles are avoiding my fortress?

In DF2010 Nobles never really arrive. You appoint all of them directly until there's a Mayoral election. Then you appoint all but one until you get a special diplomat asking which of your guys should be Baron.

That's the last of the nobility I've actually gottn in this version. I'm told eventually I'll get a Count, presumably after another diplomatic visit; and I've heard that at least one guy got a Dungeon Master.

But that's it.

The two most common reasons that people aren't offered a baron:

1) They don't have a living emissary to offer the position.

2) They don't have any road.

He he he.  Yeah, it almost looks done...  alas...  those who are in your teens, hold on until your twenties...  those in your twenties, your thirties...  others, cling to life as you are able...<P>It should be pretty fun though.

2) They don't have any road.
Does this road have to go to/from somewhere specific?

I think it has to have a certain monetary value, but I don't know how much or even how to check what a given bit of road is worth.

Pretty sure the road thing is a myth.  The living liaison is not and it's a real problem.

In the old version atleast, you had to build roads to attract the king.

I remember building tons of roads out of expensive metals (rose gold, gold, platinum etc) without them leading anywhere... and I remember them being destroyed by moody dwarves just as the king arrived.

It is the first thing he saw. The gold roads built specifically by his wish being destroyed by madmen.
