PD: I was wrong. dflinux runs better than WINE+DFwin if you use PRINT:STANDARD

DF for linux hogged up all the ram and froze, while trying to embark. Now, it's not that DFwin gets a huge performance on my poor-specced netbook, but at least it works (and with reduced pops and embark sites, is definitedly playable). It surprised me, and in fact I had tried linux version first because I assumed it would be faster. Has anyone encountered a simmilar effect?

Quite the opposite of my experiences... but everybody I know who tried came to the same conclusion as you...

they should be. I downloaded&installed ubuntu 10.04 3 days ago, and updated everything...

DF Linux works perfectly fine for me on 64 bit Linux, but it must be down to different graphical hardware/software capabilities/pathways in Windows/Linux (delete as appropriate) and your netbook lacking much power in that department. Seems unlikely that Wine somehow utilizes OpenGL that much more efficiently.

I wasn't even going to try DF under wine, after the linux version failed, but I went for it because it was listed in the "Platinum list" (as in, the apps/games that run flawlessly under WINE)

Dwarf Fortress runs faster here in my Linux Mint 7 install than my Windows Vista install.  Might have something to do with the fact that I tweaked the crap out of my init.txt under Linux but never touched it on Windows!

Yeah, I'm the opposite.  WINE is much slower for me than native.

did you two do what Footkerchief suggested (altered the print mode)?

PD: just tried it with print-text and it works. It displays ascii graphics that are even worse than the usual ones, but it works. And it IS faster than windows version, or, for that matter, WINE emulated windows version.

PPD: PRINT: STANDARD works as fast as PRINT: TEXT, looks prettier, and has less control problems. And

Yeah, I'm using either 2D or 2DSW. I also set my fps cap to 1000 and my gfps cap to 10.
