I've heard here and there that hammerdwarves can send enemies flying for ridiculous distances. This sounds fun. I've made a few hammerdwarves, though, and so far I haven't sent anything so much as a single square. What am I doing wrong?

are you playing 40d?
if not then you're probably playing DF2010 in which bludgeoning weapons have been nerfed so as to no longer do that.

Ah the joys of playing croquet with humans and then watching children playing croquet with my head after I've slaughtered everyone else in the city....40d I miss ye.

But yeah, v31 nerfed a lot of things.  Some for the better, others not so much.

You can still punt stuff, but it's more realistic now.  Key factors:

1.  Be bigger than your enemy, preferably much bigger.  Raccoons and rhesus macaques make good targets if you're normal-sized.

2.  Be nice and strong.

3.  Carry a big stick.  Or an enormous corpse, or some other insanely heavy blunt weapon. Draltha corpses from caves work fairly well, weighing in at just under 2 metric tons or so, yet still easily swingable with one hand without slowing down at all (damn Dwarven Physics . . .)

4.  Have a high weapon skill in your weapon of choice (Miscellaneous Object User for draltha corpses)

If you pay attention to these guidelines, you should be able to toss things around to your heart's content.  And yes, you can still smack things so hard into an obstacle that they explode into pieces.

If you're impatient, or feel like punting more substantial things, play as a Bronze Colossus.  Everything's fair game then.

why is Dwarven science always on fire?
Because normal science is boring

You could also throw your enemies with the wrestling screen, I've notice that throwing something smaller than you causes it to actually fly through the air instead of just falling over like in 40d

I had a masterwork bronze maul, level 13 mastery, and so far I can't even nudge a rhesus marque or fox a single square...

wrong version probably. I oncesucseded in making them fly. I hit a wolf and it fell into a river and drown.
