Make a massive hollow statue of a dwarf drinking from a beer mug, with magma pouring from the mug into his open mouth. Make this your entrance, and have the magma go down the dwarf's innards and pour around the walkway into a large artificial reservoir of magma. Also, make it so that this can be diverted to come out of his crotch and onto the walkway at the pull of a lever.

Giant copper dwarf drinking a perpetual flow of magma from a beer mug who pisses magma on unwanted visitors, or just for the hell of it.

Yes is what you should be saying/thinking right now.

This.

Do this.

Someone do this, right goddamn now.

Add a rectractable bridge as a tongue and link it to a long row of pressure plates. Automatically insult your enemies!

All that pumping would also help me set up forges on the first Z-Level, who says mega constructions aren't useful!

Of course mega constructions aren't useless. I am obsessed with dams (I haven't ever made one in DF) that produce a fudgeton of power for the entire fort. In addition, it should have controls for filling water reservoirs, reducing water flow (why? BECAUSE I HAVE A DAM! RAAAWR!), diverting water flow to farms and obsidian farms etc etc... also the dwarves in charge of the dam should live inside it.

Keep in mind how many Z-levels y ou have to work with. If there are not enough, you may have to clear some land out. My dwarf statue only made it up to waist height before I had to start over again.

The best part was I decided that instead of deconstructing it one stone at a time, I'd just cut it in half and cause a massive cave in. I'd lose one dwarf, but save a bunch of time.

Well, the cave in fell down and broke through two floors. First, it put a hole into my artificial underground stream, then it broke through my stream's floor which was directly above an old mine shaft in the fort. Queue massive, unstopable flood fun.

If we're going by tiles and materials, a basis for reference I have is that my ship has at least 5000 tiles filled (walls/floors, regardless materials). I think closer to 5250 spaces used.

You may need alot of material. How much material do you have to work with? Got the numbers yet?

Well this is interesting, I've got goblins shown up after two years... no military yet due to lack of useful ores.

I got the perfect name for that fortress:
Watergate.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

Whoa. You just game me another idea. A dam shaped like a horizontal disk. It's constructed under the river, and a huge pipe is built under this dam. Then the dam is opened by piercing the bottom of the river, so water flows inside the dam, moves water wheels and travels inside the pipe to wherever it's needed
