I do not know if this is a low amount, but this is one of the biggest Fights I have ever seen a Defender Win.

For elves, that's actually pretty common.

It says the attackers were elves. So yes they were.

I think someone posted a picture of a battle with over 2000 elves once. Not uncommon in worlds with enormous forests. Elves can turn into zerglings on those maps.

If they were zerglings, then they'd stand a fighting chance. Since they're elves, they do not.

The thing is the elves really won this battle sure the 700 elves can afford to take casualties but the 58 humans cant they will slowly grind down the humans kill by kill.

Wasn't the 2000 elves killed fighting like 28 guys?

how does the computer determine who won and who lost? Is it just attacker losses vs defenders losses or does the computer compare kill death ratios?

IIRC, Toady said it does little mini-battles between each member of the army till one [of the armies] decides to retreat or something. The battles aren't as detailed a simulation as, say, advneture mode battles, but it still does that sort of thing.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic

Yeah, I remember reading something like that, it's basically a long chain of 1v1 fights, so the kill/death ratio reflects the odds of a single soldier from one army defeating a single soldier from the other.  Since elves use equipment with atrocious stats, the humans will inevitably tear them up.  The saving grace, of course, is that elves don't die from anything else, so good old fashioned natural causes keep the human population in check, while elves have to be culled from time to time.
