Lead and Gold - Gangs of the Wild West
« on: January 05, 2011, 06:21:28 pm »

So, I got this in the Paradox Interactive Pack. I just downloaded all the games (the majority of them are utter tripe, or just rip offs of Europa Universalis etc) to try them out.

I almost skipped over this game, because - let's be honest - it seems like a crappy TF2 rip off in a Wild West setting.

It is that, in some ways. It's also a rip off of other shooting games.

But it's mainly immensely fun. The combat is fluid, if a bit "I SAW YOU FIRST YOU DEAD MOFO" and "HOP HOP HOP AWAY TO SAFETY". There's a few mechanics that seem to have been taken on by other, more frontline games (like respawning on top of the person carrying your team's flag, which is vitally important to get reinforcements to strategic places).

I think certain characters are vastly overpowered (gunslinger and the guy with the dynamite seem to be the only characters played, since they're the only ones really worthwhile in a gunfight), but it's otherwise a pretty good game.

Anyone else got it or willing to get it so I have people to play with? :3

I tried it during the free weekend a few months back, and I... wasn't very impressed.

Interestingly, though, I had nearly the opposite class opinions - I found the Deputy and Trapper (is that her name? The sniper woman.) to be the most useful, just because they can still kill you at a distance, unlike the other two classes who can't do much more than tickle you at anything beyond close range.

All in all, the third-person mechanics were interesting, but the low population (even during a free weekend!) was a bit of a killer for me. No point in a multiplayer game when there aren't that many people playing it.  :(
