Soundtrack for adventuring (weather, not music!)
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:16:02 am »

People have posted up some awesome musical tracks to adventure to, particularly when exploring the depths of the world.  Sometimes I'm not in the right mindset for that though and I'd like to have natural sounds that match what's going on... especially if I'm doing a no-fast-travel adventure, for the immersion factor.

I've been using http://www.rainymood.com/ for when there are storms and rain, but I'm still on the hunt for other (free!) weather sound tracks.

It would be good to have whistling wind for mountain climbing and desert walking, forest noises, night-time noises, that kind of thing.  If I find any useful things I'll post them in this thread.  I'd be delighted if anyone else could point me to anything like this and save me the effort, though!  My google-fu is weak.  Most of the time I'm looking for something I really want I end up feeling like Ripley interrogating Mother.

EDIT:
This is what I've got so far... still much better options out there I'm sure.
Trying to find LONG sounds so that the repetition doesn't jar too much.

RAIN: http://www.rainymood.com/
A little thunder, lots of rain.  Some odd noises in there that it would be better off without.
Ages before it repeats, lovely.

BEACH: the ambient sound effects on Treasure Isle on Facebook http://apps.facebook.com/treasureisle/
Gulls, waves breaking, bird calls.  Turn the music off, of course!

MOUNTAIN: The in-game ambient sound effects on Shenku Warrior http://www.neopets.com/games/play.phtml?game_id=786
Whistling wind.

DESERT: from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=2690
Whistling wind, again, but with a slightly different feel.  This would probably be good for being caught in a snowstorm too.  Doesn't last for long (around a minute) and doesn't loop too well, so I'm still looking for a better one.

SMALL RIVER: from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=7138
Gurgling noises for brooks and things like that.  Nearly 5m sample, not bad.

OUTSIDE: from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=66785
Birdsong type noises.  For walking in the forests.
Another from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=27808
Different birdsong, with woodpeckers and magpies.

NIGHT TIME: from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=95490
Some frogs and crickets.  Could be good for swamp areas in the daytime too, although it's a bit subdued.
Looking for something a bit more rocky, perhaps with wolves, dogs or foxes.
Also from freesound http://www.freesound.org/samplesViewSingle.php?id=84973
Owls and things, for a more woodland atmosphere.

Looking for:

INTERIOR CAVE - dripping and echos
SWAMP / RIVER - lively frogs and suchlike
FOREST / JUNGLE - more noisy than just being outside
BLIZZARD - proper snow-storm

I wonder if Toady could code these in... Maybe make it so when you're in the arctic, the arctic sound file plays. When it's raining, you hear rain. When you're in a forest, you hear woodland sounds... Just an idea.

This could be a lot easier than doing everything by hand, although there aren't that many adventure log items to trigger things.  "Discovered a river" should work out just fine, but I'm not too sure about the other things.  Worth looking into, though.
