The DF smell just came back!
« on: July 04, 2010, 02:04:13 am »

When I initially started learning DF, I first played in on my laptop, sitting in my basement, in windows 7. It's been _quite_ a while since then, and I've grown accustomed to playing DF on my desktop machine which is marginally faster and... physically larger. I worked out the init settings, got my favourite square font, and disabled sound/music so I could listen to my own music. DF's music, while nice, is a little repetitive after the first month.

Anyway, today I download the linux build, having been kicked out of my room while relatives are visiting and having installed linux on the laptop. So, fresh start sans files. When DF started up, and the non-square tileset displayed the opening movie, and the familiar old music came softly over the speakers, DF smelled like new. A thrill went up my spine, and my heart leapt. For I was about to embark on making a Fortress, embark, currently, on a tale of jealously and resourcefulness. Oh, how good it is to be back! (Even though I never left, which is... odd... to say the least.)

I'm playing the great Dwarf Fortress!
And this time, I know what I'm doing.

I suggest you don't think too much what you build and where. When ever you need something, build it as close as possible to where you need it. that way your fortress will eventually become epic
Because god knows your duke will demand a kitten silo in his office.

The whole "And this time it'll work!" thing is sortof the ethos of DF though.

Welcome back!

I would send you a welcome back fruit mushroom basket, but it seems the food stockpile and everything in it somehow got a coating of elk bird and war dog blood.

The DF smell just came back!

Made me think this story would lead to stuff like...
"And nothing heats my old laptop up like DF, so when I started playing again I got a nice whiff of those plastic fumes I haven't smelled for such a long time. Ah, the memories..."

I also thought the smell was plastic smoke, or perhaps body odour.

At the very least, fearsweat.

I think the smell is basically smoke and decay.

It's probably the smell of miasma.  Upstairs, miasma doesn't form because it is technically outside.

Ah, the fresh smell of vomit. Straight from the dwarves' mouths. Just as Armok intended.
