Making brewing require a bucket of water
« on: June 23, 2010, 08:47:42 am »

Heya peeps,

Is there a reasonably simple way of modding DF so that brewing anything also requires a bucket of water (and not using up the bucket ofcourse)?

I'm sure somebody has done it before me but forum searching didn't give me an answer.

Thanks

No, there is no simple way =) The Still is a standard building, can not be modded.

One can only do it the very hard way, removing this section from raws of every brewable plant in plant_standard:
[USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:DRINK:PLANT_ALCOHOL_TEMPLATE] (and below)
Then setting up fake plants (which will not appear in the world) with associated drinks, then creating a custom workshop, then setting custom reactions which take real (now non-brewable) plant and a bucket of water, and produce fake-plant drink.

This way you will not see any "Brew" for plants in Kitchen menu, and standard Still will not be useful.

Using the same principle you can also automate brewing. Make a custom workshop, add in a new reaction for each and every type of plant that can be brewed, and then put the [AUTOMATIC] token in the reaction.

A lot of work, but doable if you really want to.

Not to mention most alcohol production does not really take water... only beer that I can think of off the top of my head.

Hey, come on =) Most strong drinks use water. Wine does not, yes - but vodka, rum, whiskey, tequilla, everything!..

None of those do. Or they would partially freeze in a cold environment. But they don't, solid ethanol.

Edit: though admittedly I am not a distiller. Might be interesting to really but some research into. Just going off vague knowledge of what my uncle brews. Ill look farther.
Edit2: so far it looks like water would actually be a byproduct of a lot of these.

Wikipedia about water in strong drinks:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Anyway, water for brewing can't yet be modded, so *sigh*
It would really make water in DF needed =(

It says most on all of them, you really think dwarves would water down their alcohol?

Ha, that's the point! =)
But they drink wine and beer after all...

Well, we seem to derail this thread a little. As such, one can stretch things to say that no water for dwarven stills are needed. And then no water for drinking, for kitchen, for cleaning floors... for anything, really. However, water consumption is important, even for dorfs, but it is being totally neglected (sure, farming in .31 changed this... a little).

I remember an epic thread on sewage system suggestion. THAT is the right way to use water in-game =)

If you make a custom reaction doesn't that eliminate the hidden quality levels of your alcohol?

It should, I am 95% sure. However, without quality being displayed for alcohol, it needs some testing to be 100% sure, like setting two small independend forts with burrows, one with standard Still, one with custom brewery, then checking thoughts and preferences after a bit of time. Maybe there are some hard-coded things for hidden qualities for custom reaction, who knows...

I think I should point out that vodka was not invented until the 15th century and Tequila in 16th.

Ah, this does not stop guns and computers in Wasteland mod, for example =) It's modding, after all.
