Well, dernit.  I was perfectly happy being a crazed lurker, or whichever I was before.

I'll probably be back, too; tried to save my progress before opening the floodgates, and the whole PC froze.  Never had a crash with the old DF; is this one really much more memory-intensive, or is it just my luck?  :P

Tarran has the "Tarran Bug", a bug which causes the affected character to repeatedly hit teammates while dual-wielding instead of whatever the hell he is shooting at.

Started over from scratch on that embark, and...  seasonal save didn't seem to take.  Only save folder left is...  sigh; the embark.  May just reinstall if this happens again.

I'd go back to the old DF, but...  so many minerals.  So many layers.  Bauxite everywhere!

"Whole pc" freezes are more serious than DF bugs could be responsible for, I'm afraid. If it happens again, you're going to want to investigate further, in case it's a sign part of your pc is dieing.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

My recommendation would be to delete all traces of the old DF you can find, and install from scratch into a folder that is not in any way related to Program Files or any other "special" folder, like your Desktop.  Under Windows 7, the evolving standard seems to be c:\users\public\games\ and it's not a bad choice for Vista either.

Once it's installed, make sure that your user ID has "Full" rights, or at least read / write / traverse / execute , to the entire chain of folders, and to all files in the df folder and its subfolders.

Regarding freezing PC, I've had DF 2010 fail, but never take the whole PC with it.  DF 2010 can take up to the 32-bit Windows limit for a single program of 2 GB, and occasionally wants even more (site finder on large embarks, etc.), which causes DF to fail with a Windows error.  If you have less than a bit over 2 GB of memory available for DF (after OS, any other programs you're running, etc.), that could potentially cause more serious Windows problems.  If you don't have that much physical RAM, make sure you have enough virtual memory allocated (a minimum of 3 GB, and preferably more), which will be slower but better than crashing.

The other possibility is that DF can stress some computers more than other software; if you don't have adequate cooling or power supply this can cause shutdowns or lockups.

(1) The problem with the saves was all me.  ("AUTOSAVE can be set to NONE, SEASONAL or
YEARLY."  And I went ahead and set it to...  "YES".  Facepalm.)

(2) A fresh install would be worth a try, but since the save-freezes have stopped, all the black-screen-of-deathing seems to happen when I alt-tab instead of hitting f11.  (Old habits die hard.)

I'm not sure why nothing shows up on my Nobles/Admin screens, though--no expedition leader, bookkeeper, nothin'.  Can't appoint anyone to anything, because no positions show up.

(The moral here is probably that DF2010 is not a good lullaby game to play after taking your nighty-night pills.  :|)

That's a known bug. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=141

You'll just have to wait until that's fixed. Until then that fortress is basically doomed, as far as I know.

Any chance abandon/reclaim would work?

Likely I guess, since it resets your fort. Unfortunately, it removes all the mud on the cavern floors, so you'll end up with dry caverns.

I'm a paranoid, if inept, player--been avoiding the delving in favor of making a screw-pump irrigation system with water from a brook.  Won't miss the mud, but does that mean there'll be no fun plants or critters down there either?  :[

Creatures, yes. Plants, no. And trust me, the caverns look like crap with the occasional tree/shrub sprouting out of dry flooring.

Well, currently my plans are to set up an irrigation system, maybe start digging out some channels for magma.  (I'll be happy if I can make a working pump stack, and to hell with the rest of it.)

While at work, I came up with a better idea than outright abandoning...  There's a civ of reptile men down there somewhere--if my slackers won't elect a leader, then they can do some exploring...  yes...  "exploring".

And about the mud...  Has anyone ever tried flooding de-mudded re-embarked-upon caverns?  Does the mud always disappear, even if the fort fails before they dig into the caves?

I encountered an Ocean Titan made of a blob of fire that had wings.  It jumped down my refuse put and laid waste to my dining halls before I was able to lure it into my farm area.  At some point I noticed both his wings were gone.  I flooded the area in the hope that it was hurting him, but the steam just kept rising.  He finally went down through my resevoir with lots of water and evaporated it all and then blue out my flood gate that was plugging the bottom.  The titan is laying waste to my dwarves now as the lower caverns begin to flood.

Just how do you take on an Ocean Titan made of a blob of fire?

EPIC NECRO IN A THREAD THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT YOU ARE POSTING ABOUT.

Please take it to another thread. This is the wrong thread and it's two months old.
