The SDL version uses a new, considerably more effective and flexible graphical setup. It allows for .png tiles, resizing and zooming the game on the fly, and just general improvement.

Legacy only includes some minor rewrites of the older system. It's mostly there because the original merge had a lot of graphical glitches and bugs, most of which are now ironed out.

Gameplay-wise they are the same, and saves are (or should be...) compatible between them, so no dangers downloading both and seeing which you prefer.
