underground is so random.

all mine has had the layers fairly close together, but 30 z levels from the surface in one fort (that was right next to a cave) and 6 or so z levels in another fort (just below the aquifer)

also, the only adamantium breach i have done had something like 8 levels of adamantium before an open space, which reached up inside the adamantium pillar. i had actually dug past it and then dug into it sideways, and around level 12 or so. was doing ok against the denizens of the underworld till i got a "graphite man" that would explode out cavein dust in all directions. caused a lot of crazyness, then the game crashed.

I've found some tall veins of adam. but most of my forts have had only a level or two above the dangerous part.

Would make a pretty awesome megaproject to Expose the whole pillar, Hell make it the center of an arena or even build your whole fortress suspended from it.

I once got completely screwed out of adamantine. I got the notice you've struck it, and looked nothing but magma. I go over it with k. Turns out I got a few squares of rough adamantine cavern floor, with 7/7 magma over it, and nothing below it. Was so annoyed.

This is a platinum warhammer. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it menaces with spikes of platinum.
there is an image of the goblin Utes Gozrusrozsnus and dwarves in elf bone. The goblin is making a plaintive gesture. the dwarves are striking a menacing pose.
this image relates to the slaying of Utes Gozrusroz

Eh, it's been reported that if you mess with worldgen too extremely, adamantium veins can glitch to the surface. Mind you, I haven't confirmed this, but Magmawiki says it can happen.
I've had the opposite problem. One worldgen gave me a seriously fscked up world where there was an entire rough slade layer right a few layers down, even peeking out of the earth in a rough sladen mountain. I was a sad panda. I couldn't dig through and see if the slade extended further down, and I don't think it was a dark tower — I think those have smooth sides, and this slade was rough as any other unmined rock.

I did some mucking around with worldgen parameters yesterday to see if it's possible to maximise adamantine vein length. Conclusion: yes, very much so.

There are two settings which influence it:

Setting the "z levels above layer 5" option to 100 resulted in some adamantium spikes that were around 100 z levels long. It also pushed up the lava sea to around 40 or 50 levels underground. Caution: just because the spike is long doesn't mean it won't be hollow for 85% of that length.

The second setting that worked was "z levels above layer 4" to 100. Again, very long spikes, some of which protruded into the lowest caverns. However, the lava is a long, long, way down. Not a lot safer than the previous method, either, and less reliable. Sometimes, no spikes that reach up to that layer are generated, so they aren't stretched.

Of course, you can combine the two. I ended up with some spikes that were around 250 z levels long. Prepare for some lag due to the enormous depth of the generated map, though.

I checked these maps with DFHack's prospector and reveal.

On typical 4x4 maps, prospector usually tells me that there are about 1,000 to 3,500 units of raw adamantine underground.
If either of the two options was set to 100, the map typically had 15,000 units of raw adamantine.
With both set to 100, it had around 30,000.

I hope that helps.
