What happens if you embark near an inhabited city?

What happens if you embark near an inhabited human city?  Do they just keep living while you cohabit with them?

Just watch out on goblin towers. the first time goblins ambush or siege, all of them go against you. If you feel like being zerg-rushed, embark on top of a goblin fort.

Great thing about embarking on a goblin tower, though, is all the free obsidian you get from deconstructing their tower.

Or you could try to collapse the whole darn thing and kill a whole bunch of them.
