Topic: Fortifications vs Bars for filtering water from cavern (Read 1637 times)

I need to pump some water from a cavern, but I don't want any nasties to come and get me. I know that fortifications and vertical bars can both block bad guys, but is it possible for either to be destroyed or slipped past?

Fortifications can't be destroyed, but sometimes creatures can be pushed past then by flow. Grates and bars can be destroyed by building destroyers. I don't know if creatures can be pushed past grates or bars by flow. I've never seen it, but I always use fortifications to block water flow.

Not to mention that carving a fortification has pretty much no chance of a dwarf getting stuck from building from the wrong direction.

Why not use both? If your using a floodgate system, you can carve the fortifications, close the floodgates, then build bars further down the passages incase something happens.
